In 2019 the Migrant Women’s Group held their first exhibition at Māngere Arts Centre - Ngā Tohu o Uenuku titled خانه Home. The exhibition celebrated the work of some of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s Muslim migrant communities through textiles and skilled crafts. It grew out of collaboration with the social enterprise Companion Co-Design which celebrates cross-cultural co-creating by creating furniture and textile items with migrants and former refugees.

The exhibition featured an abundance of embellished found and foraged textiles and new works. خانه Home explored what is lost and what is gained in moments of cross-cultural translation. It presented slow design as a means of appreciation, authenticity and knowledge.

Held from October – November 2019, the exhibition programme included a well-remembered Māngere Migrant Craft Market, as well as embroidery and sewing workshops with members of our group. It was an amazing way to introduce some of the Māngere Arts Centre - Ngā Tohu o Uenuku audience to the cultures and traditions of our group.
