Empowering women and creating opportunities to strengthen skills and confidence in the community

Kohna Zari Ko is a project developed from the work of the Migrant Women’s Group. The group have been meeting regularly for several years to craft together, learn and support each other. Through different projects, we have used craft to feel connected and safe in our new home, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

KohnA Zari Ko provides both learning and belonging

In recognising the skills of our group and how much we enjoyed meeting together, sewing and building connections, we wanted to share our craft skills with the community. This project aims to extend our connections wider and strengthen our sense of belonging and confidence. We hope Kohna Zari Ko will also help the cross cultural connections between the home countries of our members and our new home, Aotearoa New Zealand.

Supporting Kohna Zari Ko

Our vision is for Kohna Zari Ko to be the start of a safe, enjoyable and sustainable enterprise. To ensure the future of this project, we require ongoing financial support. If this project and its vision resonates with you and you’d like to make a donation or be involved in its success, we warmly invite you to get in touch. Together we can learn what capacity you may have to support.

Here are some ways you can help:

  • Direct donation to the project

  • Sharing the project through your networks

  • Becoming a ‘drop off’ location or a ‘pop-up’ mending location

  • Donating fabric and sewing materials

  • Providing upskilling and administration support

  • Providing projects that our competent machinists could be involved in

If you would like to learn more about our group and the opportunity to get involved and show your support,  we would love to hear from you. Complete the form below or contact us by emailing kohnazariko@gmail.com

A special thank you to those who ALREADY support us

We have been fortunate to receive financial support from the Ministry for Ethnic Communities, Creative New Zealand and Objectspace to establish Kohna Zari Ko as an online mending and tailoring service.

Thanks to the support of the Mangere Otahuhu Local Board, one of our regular meet-up locations has been Mangere East Community Centre. In the eastern suburbs, Arts Out East has supported meetings at Te Tuhi in Pakuranga.

Working in these community centres has allowed us to connect with different groups that meet nearby and create opportunities to collaborate together.
